Life and Times on Deployment in Diego Garcia

Me and a Camel

Well, we don't really have Camels in Diego Garcia.  This is a picture from a trip to Bahrain on my first deployment.

Because of security concerns, I probably shouldn't post anything about work and what we do operationally.  That's the most interesting stuff, but since all I can talk about is the off-duty activities things may sound a little more leisurely than they really are.

Diego Garcia is a small Island in the middle of the Indian Ocean where we base the squadron while on deployment. It is a beautiful coral atoll 7 degrees south of the Equator.  Various sports occupy most of our spare time.  We went water skiing on Christmas day.  We have sailing, snorkeling, biking and excellent deep sea fishing.  Much of the squadron is spread-out over several other detachment sites.

Bahrain is a small independent Islamic country consisting of an island off the East coast of Saudi Arabia.  Long renown as a hub of trade in the Middle-East, it still has great shopping for clothing, jewelry, and rugs.

Misirah is an island off the coast of Oman where, well, there is nothing there.  Click here to read an interesting story about the people of Misirah.

Otherwise, life in Diego Garcia is hot and slow.  We go to work, exercise and eat.  It is a very beautiful place with a a lot of activities compared to many other places.  Here are some pictures, contributed by Scott Huth:
